| What
is Physiotherapy? |
|
Physiotherapy
is a healthcare profession concerned with human
function and movement and optimising potential.
Physiotherapists work in a wide variety of settings
but are probably most well known for their role
in management of sports injuries. However, their
expertise extends to areas such as intensive care
units, care of the elderly, mental illness, and
child development.
They specialise in individual treatments with patients
and are highly respected for their expertise in
rehabilitative exercise regimes.
Holistic Physiotherapy has evolved from Suzy’s
extensive complementary training as a yoga practitioner
and teacher and also as a therapeutic, sports and
Thai masseur, Reiki healer and Cranio-Sacral therapist.
Using the holistic framework of different treatment
modalities helps to restore and balance the body’s
own healing responses rather than targeting individual
areas and/or symptoms. This enables each client
to fully understand their condition so they can
be an active participant in their well being and
be able to make positive change themselves rather
than having to rely solely on a practitioner.
Physiotherapy can play an active part in pain relief,
healing and rehabilitation of most medical and surgical
conditions; some examples of this are listed below;
|
|
- Musculoskeletal problems e.g. back, neck
and shoulder pain, muscle imbalance, sports
injury.
- Poor posture.
- Anxiety, stress and depression
- Respiratory problems e.g. asthma
- Neurological conditions e.g. Multiple sclerosis,
M.E., Parkinson’s disease
- Post operative rehabilitation e.g. hip/knee
replacements
- Arthritis
- Circulatory problems
- High/Low Blood pressure
- Immune disorders
- Genito-urinary disorders e.g. incontinence,
P.M.T.
- Gastro-intestinal disorders e.g. irritable
bowel
- Obesity

| How does a Physiotherapist
decide on the best course of treatment? |
| |
| Your Physiotherapist
will carry out an initial assessment to determine
the nature and cause of your symptoms. This will
include a case history where you will be asked
questions and also a physical assessment will
be carried out. It is therefore advisable to wear
comfortable clothes to attend an appointment or
bring shorts to change into if you have a problem
of the hip, leg, knee or ankle.
After assessment the Physiotherapist will generally
treat you with a combination of two or more of
the following treatment modalities; |
|
- Manual therapy
- Mobilisation
- Massage
- Cranial-Sacral Techniques
- Reiki healing
- Rehabilitative exercise therapy
- Sports rehabilitation
- Pilates/core strengthening
- Advise on posture and ergonomics
- Preventative lifestyle advise
- Ergonomics
- Yoga techniques; to restore correct breathing
and body alignment
